"Choosing a domain name for your website is like picking your first house, so choose wisely!"

Choose a domain name that worksWhat is a domain name exactly? It is what the user types in their web browser to get to a certain location on the Internet.

By now everyone has heard of some of the most popular names on the Internet like:

  • Google.com

  • Yahoo.com

  • Amazon.com

Everyone would love to have a domain name that is short, descriptive, easier to remember, and easy to spell.

In real estate, agents, brokers, lenders, and everyone involved in the industry seems to think that their name is the easiest thing for people to memorize. They end up getting domain names that aren't clear, are hard to spell, and frankly don't describe anything to the next potential customer about what the website is about.

Real estate professionals select domain names like the following:

  • LindaSellsHouses.com

  • AmazingDealsbyGeorge.com

  • YourFantasticTexasRealtor.com

Sure some of the above domain names actually mention that the person is in real estate but most aren't clear and you have absolutely no idea what they actually do, where they work, or how it is going to benefit you.

Where can I use a domain name?

Most real estate professionals think that they only ever need 1 domain name and they don't need anything else. The fact is you want to own and market more than one domain name so you can appeal to different people, different parts of town, and attract different clients.

So where can you use different domain names? Here are just a few areas where you can use domain names:

  • For Your Website

  • On Flyers that you mail or have delivered to your farm

  • On Sign Riders

  • In magazine or newspaper ads

  • On merchandise like t-shirts or pens

  • For each listing that you take

  • In pay per click advertising

  • And more...

Using different domain names allows you to look like a specialist for just a few dollars a year. With different domain names in use you can see which pieces of your marketing are working the best. By the way I am speaking from experience. I personally own over 110 different domain names that I have bought from www.TopAgentDomains.com.

4 Rules to Follow when Selecting a Domain Name

Now I don't want everyone just going around buying a bunch of domain names that won't work for them. I want people to have domain names that will attract the attention of visitors to Google, be easy to remember when they mention it to friends and family, and easy to spell as well. In order to accomplish all of those goals there are some rules that need to be followed.

  • Mention the area or city that you work in your domain name - For example if you worked in San Diego, CA a few domain name ideas would be as follows:

  • Make sure that it is easy to spell - There are some areas of the country that have very hard to spell names. If you have one of those areas make sure you own a couple versions of the name that are misspelled. That way when people are searching they are bound to find you.

  • Keep them as short as possible - The shorter the name the easier it is for people to remember and spell. Keep that in mind when choosing your domain name.

  • Select a domain name with a .com unless you really have to choose something else - There is still nothing like having a .com domain name. Unless you really have to chose a .net or .info make sure that you choose .com so people aren't confused and accidently end up at one of your competitors.

Where do you go to find a domain name?

While there are plenty of place to go to purchase a domain name going to a company that focuses on delivering domain names for real estate professionals is of the highest importance. We recommend going to www.TopAgentDomains.com for the purchase of domains. In fact they are who we own over 100 domains with.
